Ask DST #366: Minimates!

It’s the 366th Ask DST with DSTChuck, and boy are his arms tired! Did we mention he writes these by hand? In blood? It’s true! This week, the president of Diamond Select Toys is answering your questions about Minimates, those 2-inch block figures that are celebrating their 15th anniversary this year. Aliens, X-Files, Marvel, Thor: Ragnarok, TMNT, Ghostbusters and more are up for discussion, but if you don’t see your question here, submit it in the drop-down form up top, or e-mail DSTChuck!

Greetings Chuck! I haven’t been collecting Minimates for very long, but after I saw your Aliens line, I fell in love. I just had a few questions:
1. Is there any possibility of Alien: Isolation Minimates? (Amanda Ripley, Working Joes, Sevastopol Survivors, and of course The Alien are a few figures that come to mind.) or is it completely out of the question?
2. Have there been any discussions about obtaining the license to AVP or is it not one you’re particularly interested in?
3. Finally I was wondering about Alien 3 and Prometheus Minimates? (The only examples I could think of at the moment are The Dog Alien, a Weyland-Yutani Commando, The Deacon, and an Engineer.)
Thank you for your time and making these fun little collectibles!

DSTChuck: Welcome to Minimates, Kolton!
1. We have not locked what we want to do with Aliens MM for 2018 yet, but Alien: Isolation has come up as a possibility. Fingers crossed!
2. We have held the AvP license in the past for various products, but we have not looked at it for Minimates.
3. We did a “flashback” Shaw Minimate in the Covenant line, but right now we have no plans for more Prometheus Minimates, sorry. We’ve been looking at introducing some characters from Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection, though!

Are you guys going to be making Minimates for the new Marvel vs Capcom game?

DSTChuck: There is nothing I can say about that at this time.

Brian G.
Any chance of seeing Extreme Ghostbusters Minimates?

DSTChuck: There are no plans at this time for more Ghostbusters MM, but never say never! There are definitely more we would like to do, if it makes sense, and we’ll keep everyone posted.

J. A.
Are you planning to release a Hulk from Thor Ragnarok in the Minimates line?

DSTChuck: Yes, we will release a full assortment of MM from that movie! Armored Hulk will be in a two-pack with Valkyrie at both Toys“R”Us and Walgreens stores, and there will be an exclusive Bruce Banner in a box set at comic shops.

Joe G.
Hey DST, I love your Minimates toy line and was wondering if you would ever make the MTV hit show Teen Wolf mini figures? There’s so many characters you can do.

DSTChuck: Sorry, there are no plans at this time to acquire that license.

Brandon D.
Is there any chance of seeing a Minimate of Nico Minoru in the near future?

DSTChuck: She is not currently on the schedule, but we have not locked all of 2018 yet.

Billy G.
Will the ALIENS line of Minimates ever be completed? Every character has been accounted for except Corporal Ferro. Is it possible she will be released with a dropship or will she appear on her own? P.S. A version of her with and without her aviator glasses would be cool. Thanks.

DSTChuck: She is definitely someone we would like to do, and have even had tentative plans to make, but we’ll have to see! More Alien universe MM coming, for sure.

Isaac G.
Hey Chuck, I’m a huge Minimates fan– specifically the Marvel (movie) Minimates. And while I know we haven’t seen any sort of concept art or anything, I’m wondering if you guys were planning on making Minimates for next year’s Venom movie?

DSTChuck: Sorry, we have no plans at this time to make product from any of the Fox movies. But Venom is never far from our hearts.

Please do a Minimates line of the seal team from zero dark thirty?

DSTChuck: We have never thought of that, but it would be pretty cool! We made some military Minimates in our Minimates M.A.X. line for Toys”R”Us and comic shops – our desert camo assortment never made it out, but we’d love to revisit it some day!

Lars S.
I love what DST is doing with the Batman: The Animated Series property! My shelves are enjoying your busts and vinyl statues from the best cartoon ever.
Can you PLEASE produce Batman Animated Series style Minimates? Please?

DSTChuck: I am very sorry, but as much as we would love to do them, Minimates are not possible. But never say never.

Luke P.
Hey Chuck, any chance of you guys doing some Crash Bandicoot Minimates? Or even figures, there hasn’t been any for a long time, the new game totally sold out everywhere, I think it would be a winner. There’s so many cool characters in the game.

DSTChuck: Interesting idea, but that is not under consideration at this time.

Ricky W.
Is there any word on continuing the TMNT Minimates after waves 6 and 7 like tapping into the Mirageverse? I would love to own a Mirage Shredder and Foot Clan, on top of getting a Splinter and the rest of the crew from that time.

DSTChuck: We are not sure right now what the future holds for our TMNT lines.

Hello, quick question. Are there any plans for Marvel vs Capcom Infinite Minimates? We got some cool ones for MvC3 and I was hoping for more.
Do you think you could also make Minimates based on Jump Comics too? I think people would enjoy Minimates of Dragon Ball, Naruto, One Piece, Kenshin, or even J-Stars Victory Vs.

DSTChuck: Sorry, but we have no plans at this time to do products for MvC again or Jump Comics.

Jason G.
I have recently seen the new Minimates at SDCC and I wanted to know if you guys are planning on making anymore new Inhuman Minimates like Inferno and or a Jimmy Hudson Wolverine.

DSTChuck: It is very possible, because we have not planned out all of 2018 yet.

Chris P.
Couldn’t help but notice the lack of the iconic Watchmen “smiley face” button on the recent Comedian Mini and Vinimates. Was this a conscious decision to leave it off, perhaps due to the questionable legal status of the smiley face copyright? A simple yellow circle paint application could have been substituted, especially on the Minimate where the fine detail of the smiley would have been lost at that scale.

DSTChuck: We have been asked to not include the smiley in any of our products.

Hey, I was just wondering if you are going to do DC Minimates from the DC TV shows, movies and animated adventures. Are you also doing more X-Files stuff like Minimates and figures and in the future are you going to do Doctor Who, Supernatural or Sherlock Minmates?

DSTChuck: Sorry, we do not have the rights to do Minimates from any of the CW TV shows, and we do not have plans for Who, Sherlock or Supernatural at this time. But we’d like to do more X-Files products for next year – new Minimates and action figure designs already exist!
