Ask DST #373: Minimates!

It’s another edition of Ask DST with Diamond Select Toys president DSTChuck! This week, he’s tackling some big questions for the tiny toy line known as Minimates! With 15 years of releases and dozens of licenses, fans have a lot invested in their collections, and are dying to know what’s next! Chuck does his best to answer, and although the answer may be “no,” he never says never! Submit your own question in the drop-down form up top or e-mail DSTChuck!

Why not make regular Minimates of DC characters?

DSTChuck: We do not have the rights to DC Minimates, but we have asked. In the meantime, we’re having fun with the Vinimates, as well as with Minimates for Gotham, Watchmen and iZombie.

Hey Chuck, the New AMC series Preacher is pretty nifty and quite faithful to the comic. How about some Minimates of Jesse and crew?

DSTChuck: We’ve discussed it, but it has not gone past that stage yet.

Hello, I’ve been a huge fan of all the Marvel & DC Minimates that DST have released ever since the early 2000s, but lately it seems like the figures have been designed mostly for the new generation of kids (Avengers Assemble, Web Warriors, MCU Movies, Marvel Now). I was wondering if in the nearby future DST might release Marvel characters that were based on the classic Silver Age to Bronze Age once again. It felt like the demand for classic characters was much higher. I saw recently that there will be a X-Men vs Brotherhood box set coming in late December which totally looks cool as hell. And my other question is whatever happened to the D.C. Minimates that only ran for a couple of Waves? Those Minimates were also super cool. Also, just a few idea pitches, I think that a Guardians of the Galaxy wave (from the comics) would be cool, reintroducing and redesigning earlier waves of Minimates would be dope, and Marvel Minimates Max was the bomb. I have both the Sentinel and Galactus.

DSTChuck: We try and mix modern comics, classic comics and movies into the Minimates line – but that said, it seems impossible to make everyone happy. We have done some classic figures quite recently: Marvel Series 68 was themed to the Giant-Sized X-Men, and Series 69 was mostly classic Avengers and their villains. And the Avengers Assemble line at Walgreens often tackles classic characters like Medusa, Man-Thing and the Squadron Supreme. Check out Series 74 for Surtur, Series 75 for Purple Man, Toys“R”Us Series 24 for the Collector, and TRU Series 25 for Jack O’Lantern and the Chameleon! DC Minimates ran for several waves, but we designed them for another company; Minimates are not possible at this time, beyond the Gotham and Watchmen Minimates we have done. As far as Max goes, there are no plans right now, but we have talked about it, and maybe down the road we’ll see if Marvel might allow that again.

Huge fan of Minimates; huge fan of Star Wars. Please tell that ONE day we will have Star Wars Minimates. It just seems like a win-win-win.

DSTChuck: That would be very cool- but for now it’s not possible.

Hello there, DST Chuck! How’re you doing? I got some questions on MiniMates for you.
1. Any plans for next year’s Avengers Infinity War Movie Minimates?
2. Have any plans for more of the 1987 TMNT Characters in Minimate forms?

DSTChuck: I’m great, Joshua – thanks for asking.
1) YES – we have an approved line plan and designs and prototypes are underway.
2) Not at this time – sorry.

Any chance of the following: Babylon 5, Andromeda, The Phantom, Doc Savage, The Shadow, Buck Rogers, Dick Tracy, The Lone Ranger, The Green Hornet, Law & Order, Law & Order SVU, CSI, NCIS, Cthulhu Mythos, Zorro, Dark Shadows, Wild Wild West, BSG Reboot?

DSTChuck: We’ve done some Buck Rogers and tons of the Ron Moore BSG, not sure the others are under consideration at this time.

1) Any plans to update the X-men blue and gold teams from the 90s? I really liked the Giant sized X-men updates and would love to see the 90s revisited as well.
2) On the same note of the 90s, please tell me there are plans for the 90s X-factor team? They are my favorite team that hasn’t been made yet in Minimate form.

1) We are all very much fans of that time period, so I would not rule that out.
2) I suppose that is possible, but not as likely as X-Men.
