Ask DST #424: Black Hole, Sonic, Ghostbusters and More!

Posted by DSTZach on Jan 4th 2021

It’s an all-new Ask DST, where fans ask Diamond Select Toys and Gentle Giant Ltd. president DSTChuck questions, and they get answers! This week, the questions run the gamut, from Mortal Kombat to Muppets, from DC to Marvel, from Sonic to Star Wars, and from Ghostbusters to the Black Hole!

With the success of your first two absolutely superb Black Hole packs, have you given the green light to additional sets? I see the original plan was to make interlocking Cygnus bases and I’m hoping this means we’ll be getting STAR, Sentry Robots, Humanoids and even the human cast as well. How likely are these wild fantasies of mine?

DSTChuck: We do have some plans for more Black Hole, so hopefully we are able to make some of them happen in 2021. Now that Black Hole and Tron are out there, I think retailers are finding there is interest.

I have become a huge fan of your Gallery PVC line ever since you started working on the comic versions of Batman’s rogues gallery. The amazing sculpts, unique bases, and iconic character design choices have all been fantastic, and I’ve been buying up any new Batman villains (plus Batman and a few allies) as they become available. I was hoping you could let us know if we’ll see any new announcements soon regarding more Batman villains? You really knocked the recent releases (Joker, Harley, Poison Ivy, Scarecrow, Penguin, Catwoman, Bane, plus Two-Face soon) out of the park, but there are so many more great characters to do, so I hope that this line continues for quite a while – it goes without saying that you’ve got to AT LEAST give us Riddler, Mr. Freeze, Ra’s al Ghul, Talia (comic version), Clayface, Killer Croc, Man-Bat, and Mad Hatter! I’m also a big fan of the Burtonverse releases of Batman and Catwoman, and a continuation of that with a 1989 Joker and Batman Returns Penguin would be grand. Thanks for taking the time to answer this!

DSTChuck: I am so glad you like the villains line, that was so much fun to work on, a real dream come true. We’ll have to wait and see what Warner Bros./DC will allow us to do going forward. Cross your fingers.

Is there a chance you will do the celestials(space gods) from marvel comics as action-figures!!
DSTChuck: Sorry, no plans at this time, but never say never.

Hey! I am loving what you guys are doing with MK!!! What other characters do you have planned with the bust and gallery lines?

DSTChuck: As long as the Mortal Kombat line keeps selling, there are lots of characters and versions we would love to do. The line is really just hitting retail right now, so we’ll see how fans react.

Will there be any more real ghostbusters figures? These are AMAZING and crazy popular! (see the prices on line nowadays) Would love to see Janine and some main villains from the line.

DSTChuck: Right now, with the new movie coming out, we are in a hold for the GB figures, but we can’t wait to do more.

Kyle J.
The John Wick series has been great any chance of more Keanu figures, maybe for the new Matrix Movie?

DSTChuck: Honestly, we would love to get our hands on the Matrix movies, and it’s been discussed, so we’ll see. Lots of uncertainly out there right now with movies.

Ricky D.
With the completion of the Electric Mayhem, is there any possibility of disturbing Rizzo the Rat and the Sam Eagle to finish the Muppet collection?

DSTChuck: We keep trying to find out new way to keep the Muppets line going, so we’ll see.

I believe at this past year’s Toy Fair, Sonic the Hedgehog Selects were shown off. Are those still in the pipeline, and when can we expect to see those solicited? And do they come with bases?

DSTChuck: Work is still ongoing with the Sonic figures, there will be several accessories but no specific bases.

Since the beginning Gentle Giant had a great thing going with the Star Wars jumbo figure line with approx. 2 pre-orders per quarter throughout the year but as time went on and Gentle Giant which ownership the orders became less and less now the only time we are able to get one is when renewing the membership. My question is, are you plan on going to cancel this jumbo line?

DSTChuck: Patrick, I think we have been as forthcoming as possible about the jumbo line and the fact that it is not canceled. Work continues on the line, including several all-new pieces. I think it’s been several years since Gentle Giant Ltd. did 8 per year, and I don’t think we’re going to be releasing that many new sculpts, but there should be several per year, and there will still be one for the PG membership each year.
